Smart Smoke Detector:

Nest Labs, which Google recently acquired for $3.2 billion, opened its smart Nest thermostat and smoke detector to developers in June to make more products work together in the home, from washing machines and garage doors to lights and cars.

Now, more than 4,000 developers are a part of its Works With Nest platform, which connects smart products with Nest's offerings, the company said on Friday. The integration growth is a part of a greater effort by Nest (and ultimately Google) to kickstart the home automation revolution.

The news also comes as Apple readies its HomeKit platform for developers, which will act as a software hub for web-connected products to work together in the home in similar ways.

Among the new partnerships announced is one with ivee, a voice-activated assistant that will allow Nest thermostat users to adjust the temperature and control energy levels via voice command. The thermostat will also have geofencing capabilities, so it will know when to lower the temperature when no one is home or when raise it on their way back, simply by picking up on the presence within a certain radius.

The Nest thermostat will also work with the Pebble smartwatch, allowing users the ability to control it via their wrist.

There are updates coming to the Nest Smoke Detector as well. For example, a partnership with Rachio can now turn on smart sprinklers when the alarm is going off for a certain amount of time.

We're still quite some time away from a fully automated home — but Nest is trying its best to speed up that process.
