Apple smart watch coming in Spring

From the Report: Apple Watch coming in spring 2015

When Tim Cook unveiled the Apple Watch in September, he teased an "early 2015" launch date. But a new statement uncovered on Sunday indicates that we may have to wait a little longer — try spring.

The new time window comes via a report from 9to5Mac, which obtained a transcript of an internal Apple video statement from Angela Ahrendts, Apple's Senior Vice President of Retail and Online Stores, addressing the company's employees.

"We're going into the holiday, we'll go into Chinese New Year, and then we've got a new watch launch coming in the spring we've got a new watch launch coming in the spring," reads the transcript of Ahrendts' video message obtained by a source in contact with the site.

Assuming Ahrendts was addressing Apple's U.S. staff, that would mean that we won't see the Apple Watch until around March 20, at the earliest.

Many had hoped that "early 2015" meant late January or February, at the latest. This unofficial update regarding the device's launch window could serve to cool at least some of the anticipation from consumers anxious to give Apple's first wearable device a try.

How to Preserve Battery Life on iPhone 6 Running iOS 8

Have you bought the new iPhone 6 or 6+? Perhaps after using it for a short period of time, you have noticed the battery life isn’t what you would like. Is iOS 8 is draining the life out of your new handset.

The latest software update makes the operating system work much harder. Although the newest iPhones are not as likely to suffer from this noticeable battery drainage, your older models that are running iOS 8 will probably be suffering from shortened battery life.

But whatever phone you have, you can benefit from having a more efficient battery life. Here are some ways to preserve battery life:

Find out what is draining the battery:

One of the latests updates in iOS 8, allows users to see a rundown of what apps use the most power. Go to Settings > General > Usage > Battery Usage to find out which apps are using the most power in the last 24 hours. Simply close the apps or delete the ones you no longer need. This will only work if your phone has been running for a few days as it needs enough data to use.

Turn off any location-tracking applications:

You don’t always need to be tracked. iOS 8 now allows users to choose a “While Using” option for certain apps (like Facebook).

Navigate to Settings > Privacy > Location Services. You can still leave on Find My iPhone from this menu. Go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services > Share My Location, to turn off another battery draining feature. You just have to remember to turn it back on if you want to use this feature again. Turning off Wi-Fi from the Settings menu, will also save your battery. You don’t need wifi if you are not using your phone.

Control notification widgets:

Accessing the Notification Centre is easily done by pulling down the menu from your top screen and customising your ‘Today’ view. Select which widgets you want to keep and which ones you can live without by tapping the ‘Edit’ button. Alternatively, you can navigate to Settings > Notifications and turn off notifications from apps.

Turn off Handoff:

If you are not planning on using two devices at the same time, you don’t need to run Handoff. Go to Settings > General > Handoff & Suggested Apps.

Stop fetching:

Fetching allows email notifications to go to your home screen. If you are not bothered about this function, turn it off by going to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Fetch New Data.

There are lots of ways to preserve your battery, you just have to turn off any functions you don’t really need.

Apple Retina 5K iMac Has a Screen That Can Stop Traffic:

There is a lot to like about Apple's 27-inch iMac With Retina 5K Display. In addition to having the fastest processor that Apple's ever put in an iMac as well as a super-slim frame, the Retina 5K iMac is stunning with a 5,120 x 2,880 display that seems to defy reality with its clarity and picture depth.

Retina, Apple's branding term for HiDPI, or high dots per inch, is central to the new iMac. Retina devices first appeared in 2010 with the iPhone 4. In 2012, the iPad got its own crystal-clear, ultra-sharp screen, followed by the 15-inch and, later, 13-inch MacBook Pro notebooks.

These Are the Biggest Android Tablets That Money Can Buy

Android TabletsHow big do you like your tablet? If you're designing a kid-friendly device that can be used as an easel, learning resource and game platform, the answer is probably: roughly Monopoly-board big.

No, 10 or even 12 inches isn't going to do it for you. You're going to want a device with a 20- or 24-inch display, like nabi's new Big Tab tablets, made by Fuhu. The Big Tabs are the biggest Android slates we've ever seen for sale (although there have been demos of significantly bigger models).

Apple MacBook Pro Receives Upgrade

Apple MacBook Pro

As Apple’s product landscape is fluid at the best of times, it is easy to miss when some of their products get a subtle revamp.  For the more discerning Apple fan, it is prudent to keep an eye on the Apple Store to see if any changes occur.   Some watchers has noticed the company’s online site took a brief hiatus yesterday morning, and when it came back on again something wonderful had occurred; revised models of the 13? and 15? MacBook Pro.

Apple Beta Seed For OS X

I really like tinkering with my computer.  A tweak here, an upgrade there.  If you are like me, you love it when a brand new update to an OS is announced.  When it comes to Apple, I am always close to the front of the line, just waiting to try out the new version of OS X.

Until recently the only way you could gain access to a new version of OS X was to either gain a copy illegally (not recommended) or sign up for the developer program.  The dev program at Apple is great, if you don’t mind shelling out $99 to become a registered developer that is.  Fear not though, if you not a member of that particular club as on Tuesday this week, Apple announced a new initiative called the OS X Beta Seed Program.

Apple Beta Seed For OS X - Software, Apple
Apple Beta Seed For OS X

If you sign up to the Beta Seed Program, you as the user, can register to receive pre-release versions of OS X, starting with OS X 10.9.3, which is available starting Tuesday. By tinkering around with the new software and providing some feedback to Apple, you can help shape the OS.

I know what you are thinking ‘a version of this program previously existed, it was called Appleseed’.  That initiative however, was an invite-only deal and the company offered it only occasionally.  Beta Seed, in comparison, is available to any member of the public that has an Apple ID.

If you are going to try this out, then Apple recommends that you make a backup before installing any beta software. By running a downloadable Beta Access Utility, Apple will make beta seed versions of OS X and also any additional software Apple sees fit to test, via the Mac App Store.  Once you have installed the Beta Access Utility, any pre-release software will appear in the Updates pane of the store.

If you do want to join up to the program, you are required to undergo certain things; You have to log in with your Apple ID and then accept a confidentiality agreement, which then prohibits you from discussing or sharing publicly, any information about the pre-release software with people who are not also using the pre-release software.  (According to the agreement, Apple will likely provide discussion boards that are expressly for the purpose of discussing pre-release software)

This agreement also warns you that by using pre-release software it may be hazardous to your computer, as it may include bugs (you don’t say?).  Also, you will not receive any warranty coverage or support for any problems with the software, so install it at your own risk.

So, there you have it, enjoy a new version of OS X, but at your own peril.  As always, if you would like to leave a sensible comment, then please do so in the comments section below.

iTunes To Start Selling Subscriptions To Beats Music

The latest updated version of the Beats Music iPhone app is now taking new subscriptions utilising the iTunes billing system. The motive for this action is due to the high number of iPhone users, which the service currently has, coupled with the difficulty in getting a new subscriber base without an in-app option.

This updated change comes with a hefty price for Beats Music, however; out of the $10 monthly service rate, $3 of it will be paid directly to Apple.  The fee that Beats Music is paying is apparently worth the update, to the company. Currently, well, at this point in time anyway, the update has not come with a price hike attached to the service to cover the costs that the music firm will be shelling out.

Ian Rogers, Beats’ CEO, said to the researchers at Re/Code that this decision was based on the complete number of iPhone users: over half of Beats Music subscribers use the Apple handset and by offering the new in-app subscription option, the company anticipates that the total number of subscribers will increase.

Rogers went on to address the speculation regarding company’s subscriber numbers, saying, “We’ve had far more people try the product than projected. Clearly the marketing works. The conversion rate on the AT&T plan is off the charts. It’s safe to say the biggest problem is converting iOS users, and we’ve just fixed that.”

Well, we will have to wait and see ‘if’ this move fixes their problems.  You can download the app through the iTunes Store.   As always, if you would like to leave a sensible comment, then please do so in the comments section below.

Prices Set To Rise For iTunes & App Store Downloads

When the chancellor announced the latest budget for the UK, it was revealed that a previous loophole allowing digital downloads to avoid tax in the UK will now be closed. As a result, when these new laws take effect, it could be that we see an increase in price for downloads from Apple’s iTunes and App Store.

The budget document read: “As announced at budget 2013, the government will legislate to change the rules for the taxation of intra-EU business to consumer supplies of telecommunications, broadcasting and e-services. From 1 January 2015 these services will be taxed in the member state in which the consumer is located, ensuring these are taxed fairly and helping to protect revenue.”

The new law will mean that downloads by UK customers will be taxed at 20%. Companies such as Apple and Amazon have been able to avoid the UK’s 20% VAT by selling their products from other countries where the tax rate is much lower, like Luxembourg for example, where it is typically 3%-15%.

Expect to see this change effect all digital downloads from January 1, 2015.

How Apple is Trying To Make Your iPhone Battery Last Longer

Anyone who has ever used an iPhone (or a smartphone for that matter) has experienced the phone’s battery dying at not such a good time. And is it just me, or does it seem like most of the time we’re nowhere near a charger when it happens? Since an iPhone with a dead battery is little more than a fancy-looking paperweight, Apple is in the process of trying out different ideas to make your battery last as long as it can before it bites the dust. And I have to admit – the thinking behind this is pretty neat.

Apple recently published a patent called ”Inferring user intent from battery usage level and charging trends”. That’s a big title for such a basic idea: they’re trying to figure out when people are most likely to use their phone, and when they’re most likely to charge their phones. Then, once they figure that out, they can devise a way to make the battery last until it finally gets plugged into the wall.

Could The iPhone Be About To Get Even Smarter?

Here’s how this process could work in one instance: if your phone notices that you regularly use 4G data when you’re going to and coming from work, it could automatically switch off the wi-fi on your phone and turn it back on in the afternoon/evening when you’ll most likely be connected to wi-fi. It would also figure out when you routinely use your phone the most and save its “big” power for those times.

Besides observing your usage patterns, Apple is also interested in figuring out when people charge their phones and for how long at a time. If it’s plugged in most of the day, obviously only slight (if any) changes will have to be made to make sure the battery lasts all day, whereas if it only gets plugged in at the end of the day, bigger adjustments will have to be made to keep the juice from running out.

I don’t know how you feel about this – it could be a good thing – or it could just be more information than Apple really needs to know. What do you think?

Forget Weights, Tone Those Biceps With ToneFone

It seems there is just no end to the diverse and unusual uses for the humble iPhone case. It was only last week that I reported on the case that also doubles up as a stethoscope and now keeping on the health theme, I’d like to introduce the ToneFone.

ToneFone is quite simply a dumbbell; made from British steel and coated with rubber for more comfortable handling, you have the choice of either the 1Kg or 1.5Kg weight. At the moment they are both only available in white but gold and space grey models are set to be released at the beginning of June.

Forget Weights, Tone Those Biceps With ToneFone - Mobile, Apple
Forget Weights, Tone Those Biceps With ToneFone

ToneFone is compatible with the iPhone 5 and 5S and doesn’t obstruct access to the headphone jack or charging port, however because of the weight, it would be unwise to use it with any iPhone stand.

I know what you must be thinking, ‘Oh here’s just another pointless gimmick’, yet you may be surprised to hear that according to ToneFone’s product page, the intial batch completely sold out. So there are clearly people out there who think this is a good product.

The ToneFone costs $38 for the 1Kg and $42 for the 1.5Kg. Although the initial batch sold out, you can pre-order the iPhone case and expect to receive it by April.

Is iTunes Coming To Android?

As someone who switched from an iPhone 3Gs to a Galaxy S3 and then switched back to an iPhone 5s recently, I can tell you that there is a world of difference when it comes to purchasing and listening to your music. With the iPhones, all I have to do is look up the music with the native iTunes app and I can download it right away and enjoy it. With my older Android phone, I could download the music from the Google Play Store and listen to it with their app – and, while admittedly the song quality was excellent, the song choice left something to be desired.

You might call me picky, but iTunes has a much better music catalog than Google does. While many artists and songs overlap between the two, Google is missing some popular musical acts, such as The Beatles and Metallica. (You can purchase the solo material from the members of The Beatles, though). And, while you can’t play iTunes music on an Android phone, you can download the Google Play music app on the iPhone. I’m not the only person who has noticed this problem and it has led to some serious beginning-stages talks about the possibility of Apple allowing iTunes to be able to be downloaded on an Android phone.

Is iTunes Coming To Android? - Mobile, Apple
Is iTunes Coming To Android?

Is There AnDroid In The Future?

Apparently, giving access to iTunes on Android phones and tablets isn’t as easy as it sounds. Obviously, they would still be powered by the Android OS and not by Apple’s – the only Apple software would be the iTunes catalog and possibly a music player. (It’s unknown at this stage if the songs would be able to play through Android’s native music player).

This could be a long time coming (if ever) due to the fact that Apple would have to work some magic with many record labels.

What do you think? Would this be a good idea?

LG Smart Lighting Comes With Full IOS Support

A few months ago I wrote a story on the Phillips Hue Smart Lightbulb system.  Well, it didn’t take long for other tech giants to jump on the band-wagon.  LG has introduced their version of the Smart Bulb.  The LG Smart Bulb is a connected light bulb that is Bluetooth and WiFi enabled.  It is very similar to the Philips Hue.  The Smart Bulbs are capable of connecting to both Android and iOS devices and will retail for approximately $32.

LG says the bulbs will run for over a 10-year period, based on an average usage of 5 hours per day. Of the many features which re included are; a security mode that enables you to set the bulbs to switch on when you are away from home.  There is also a very cool feature; the ability to flash when you are receiving a telephone call. Android users have the edge on matters though as they can also enable ‘party mode’ where the lights will blink in time to the beat of played music.

Cross-platform support for any device is a great idea and it will be good to see how these compare to Phillips’ Hue offering.  This is of course if and when they go on sale outside of LG’s home of Korea.

LG does has an advantage on the Hue Smart Bulbs in their pricing structure. At $32 each, they are nearly half the price of one Philip’s smart bulbs. Would you make good use of a smart lighting system?  As always, if you would like to leave a sensible comment, then please do so in the comments section below.

Customers Now Only Have 14 Days To Return iPhones To Apple

There’s an old saying somewhere that goes something like this: give anything enough time and it will eventually change. That statement is proving true especially lately as Apple has reversed a long-standing policy that had allowed customers to try out iPhones for up to 30 days. And, on the off chance they decided they didn’t like the phone, they could return it within that 30 day window and get a refund. Not so anymore.

Apple recently posted a change to this policy on their website and made it effective immediately. Now, instead of having a return window of 30 days, customers only have 14 days to try out their new iPhones before deciding if they want to keep them or go with something else. It should be noted that this is the same policy which has already been in effect for other Apple products such as iPods and iPads.

Customers Now Only Have 14 Days To Return iPhones To Apple - Apple
Customers Now Only Have 14 Days To Return iPhones To Apple

Is This A Smart Move By Apple?

Obviously, some people will be up in arms about this policy change, stating that 14 days isn’t really enough time to get to know an iPhone. But what are you going to do in 30 days you didn’t already do in 14 days? Honestly, I think you know if you like the phone within the first few hours of using it, and it shouldn’t take days to come to a final decision – but that’s just me.

What do you think? Do you think this is ultimately a good business decision for Apple, or do you think they’ve made a mistake somewhere along the line? All one can do is encourage would-be-buyers to do their best to try out all the features on the iPhone before the 14 days is up and they’re all out of luck.

Apple Releases 8GB iPhone 5C To Boost Sales

Apple has launched its new 8GB version of the colourful plastic iPhone 5C. There wasn’t much fuss made of the release and the new model will only be available in a few regions that include Europe and Australia. It is thought this might just be the thing needed to give iPhone 5C sales a bit of a boost.

Priced at £429 or around $400, it is £40 cheaper than its big brother. Although it’s still not ‘cheap’, at least the price tag is heading in the right direction.

Apple Releases 8GB iPhone 5C To Boost Sales - Apple
Apple Releases 8GB iPhone 5C To Boost Sales

The 8GB that the phone comes with  soon gets taken up, especially when you consider iOS 7 takes up around 2-3GB. Plus Apple doesn’t give you the option of expandable storage via a microSD, so the 8GB may not go as far as you think.

One bonus is that Apple is throwing in 5GB of free iCloud storage, so at least that gives you room to expand a little.

Apple has not yet announced whether the 8GB iPhone 5C will be hitting the US but I think its most likely it will.
