A recent press release by David Helgason, CEO of Unity Technologies stated;  Every time we ship a new version of Unity, we’re looking to empower developers with technology that’s more powerful and easier to apply than ever before, With the huge additions of physically-based shading, lighting workflows, a new platform, and a new built-in method for user acquisition, we’re improving Unity dramatically from both a creative and business perspective.

The Unity 5 engine has added some huge features this time. The most notable of which includes 64bit support and improved audio tools and lighting tools.  Unity has also partnered up with Mozilla to bring Unity 5 to WebGL. This means that the new engine may run within Firefox without any need for additional plug-ins! An awesome prospect.

Here is an except from the Mozilla blog giving a little more information; Mozilla and Unity are announcing new deployment tools bringing Unity-authored games to the Web without the need for plugins, made possible thanks to Mozilla-pioneered technologies including WebGL, a Web graphics library and asm.js, a supercharged subset of JavaScript. Unity’s WebGL add-on will be made available with the release of Unity 5.0 later this year.  Millions of Unity developers will have the opportunity to export their Unity content directly to the Web without the friction of plugins while maintaining smooth and silky gameplay. To demonstrate this technology in action, Unity and Mozilla are showcasing a preview of the popular game, Dead Trigger 2, running in Firefox at near-native speed.

So there you have it, the latest version of Unity is ready for pre order now and the WebGL add-on will be ready later this year.  Al in all, good news folks. As usual, the price isn’t cheap, but you pay for what you get and you get a lot.
